Reconnex and Blue Coat Partner to Monitor and Protect Sensitive Data
(Nov 12, 2007)-- Reconnex announced a relationship with Blue Coat Systems to enable proxy-based traffic blocking of Intellectual Property (IP) and other private and sensitive data. The Reconnex iGuard content monitoring appliance has been extensively tested for interoperability with Blue Coat ProxySG appliances, which deliver a scalable proxy platform architecture that secures Web communications and accelerates delivery of business applications. Through the use of the Reconnex and Blue Coat products, enterprises will be able to monitor and analyze content crossing their networks, with excellent visibility into and control of SSL communications.
The inter-operability of Reconnex iGuard and Blue Coat ProxySG products solves a number of problems that companies face today, such as data breaches and trade secret violations. Companies lose confidential data that travels across the WAN without realizing it, because data is hidden behind SSL encryption. As well, corporations must comply with the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA), the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Payment Card Industry (PCI) data security standard, California 1386 (CA 1386), and a number of other federal, state, and industry laws and regulations that deal with information privacy.
"Preventing the disclosure of sensitive data is a top priority for us," said Brian Flynn, senior vice president of technology at BCD Travel. "Many cases of sensitive data disclosure result from accidental actions by employees. The integration of Reconnex and Blue Coat appliances will provide an automated method to prevent these disclosures."
The Reconnex iGuard and the ProxySG appliances communicate with one another via the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP). Together, they control the exposure of data via Web mail (HTTP), files (FTP), and HTTP over SSL (HTTPS). The ProxySG appliances decrypt SSL-encrypted content and proxies other Internet communications. The iGuard scans the content, and then the ProxySG appliances take appropriate enforcement action.
"Unauthorized, sensitive or confidential data flows out of enterprises and organizations across many different channels, including Webmail, FTP and instant messaging," said Benjamin Rice, director of strategic alliances, Blue Coat Systems. "The combination of Blue Coat and Reconnex appliances can protect sensitive data and prevent loss across these channels of Web communication. Our ProxySG appliances provide outstanding visibility into Web communications, even those with SSL encryption, and can take protective actions based upon direction from the Reconnex data loss protection appliance."
Today, more information leaves the network in more ways than ever before. One in 400 outbound messages, including emails, Webmails, and Instant Messages (IMs), contain confidential information. Additionally, one in 50 network files contain confidential information. Together, the Reconnex iGuard appliance and the Blue Coat ProxySG appliances can help enterprises to stop loss of confidential data, and to enforce encryption policies and workforce compliance.
