Secure Computing’s Webwasher Ranks #1 With A 99.9 Percent Catch Rate In A New Anti-Malware Study

Test shows Webwasher accurately differentiates between malicious and non-malicious files, keeping false positives to an absolute minimum

SAN JOSE, CA—February 11, 2008—Secure Computing Corporation (NASDAQ: SCUR), a leading enterprise gateway security company, today announced that in an independent test Secure Computing’s Webwasher® Anti-Malware engine ranked first place, achieving a near-perfect overall score and surpassing all other leading vendors. Secure Computing’s Webwasher scored higher than all 26 other companies and had a false positive rate as low as 0.003%, surpassing all other gateway solutions. The research, conducted by independent AV Test Labs (www.av-test.org) and published in January of 2008, tested and scored vendors on a range of capabilities including signature-based protection, false positive differentiation, proactive detection and reaction time. These test lab results demonstrate the superior ability of Webwasher to effectively secure users in a rapidly evolving threat landscape with absolute accuracy in the area of false positive screening.

The test bombarded each solution with over one million different malicious files from the past 6 months and evaluated malware detection capabilities performed on Windows XP. It also barraged each solution with 65 thousand non-malicious files in an effort to differentiate accurate from non-accurate false positive screening. With a combination of Trojan Horses, backdoors, and bots (zombies) to detect, Secure Computing’s Webwasher technology emerged as the clear winner.

“Proactive protection based on behavioral analysis is required to protect today’s enterprises,” stated Andreas Marx, managing director for AV Test Labs. “However, it is also important to accurately classify malicious files which is why we decided to look at false positives in this particular test.”

“AV Test Labs in Germany is one of the most discerning and credible in the security community, and to receive a near-perfect score validates our pioneering, multi-layered approach,” said Ken Rutsky, vice president of Product Marketing, Secure Computing. “Considering the vast amount of threat samples seen in the past six months and used in this study, customers need solutions that provide accurate, proactive and real-time protection.”

Secure Computing’s Webwasher is the industry’s first and only reputation-based Web gateway security solution that protects enterprises from spyware, phishing, malware, data leakage, and Internet misuse, while ensuring policy enforcement, regulatory compliance and a productive application environment. Webwasher employs the most sophisticated behavioral and signature-based techniques for stopping malware, as well as patented content analysis software for stopping data leakage. The solution takes a new and radically different approach to Internet Security, employing Secure Computing’s global reputation-based system and methodology, TrustedSource™. This assigns a reputation to message senders and Web URLs, domains and IP addresses in real-time, providing highly proactive, immediate protection.
