State Government Agencies across the Country Assure Network Security with CORE IMPACT

(June 04, 2007)-- Core Security Technologies, provider of CORE IMPACT, the first-to-market penetration testing product for assessing specific information security risks, today reported a substantial and growing market for penetration testing by state governments, with 30 percent of states now using CORE IMPACT to perform regular, automated penetration testing. Some of the state government agencies and departments that now use CORE IMPACT to efficiently and accurately identify real risks to their security postures include those in: Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina.

“As the CISO, I have to know the security posture of our IT environment at all times, and with CORE IMPACT, I can easily scan and audit our infrastructure at any time,” said Steve Bass, chief information security officer for the Maryland Department of Public Safety. “I have used several tools for vulnerability assessment in my career, but CORE IMPACT takes it a step further by allowing us to do non-invasive penetration testing without interrupting operations.”

State agencies face unprecedented security challenges as they extend their network boundaries for collaboration and information sharing, using technology to improve the services they offer to their constituents. The departments using CORE IMPACT vary from state to state, and include administrative services, information technology, information security, public safety, audit, and various fields such as corrections and education. In addition, as states have introduced online transaction services – such as those for tax payments, motor vehicle registrations and healthcare-related services – they have been tasked with complying with multiple regulations for protecting individuals’ identity, health and financial information. These regulations include the Payment Card Industry (PCI) Security Standard and the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

To validate their security measures and facilitate these regulatory compliance requirements, state agencies have increasingly turned to CORE IMPACT. By automating previously manual and expensive tests, CORE IMPACT considerably shortens the penetration testing process and helps these states safely prove the effectiveness of their security investments. The product generates comprehensive reports that can easily be customized and shared with auditors and other parts of the organization.
