OSHA renews Alliance with the Association for High Technology Distribution

(Dec 12, 2008)-- A checklist that ensures the proper functioning of a machine guarding device is among the products developed through an Alliance recently renewed between the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Association for High Technology Distribution (AHTD) to protect machine operators.

The association created the "Sample Light Curtain Check-Out Log" that lists inspection items such as verifying that additional guarding devices, interlock switches and mechanical barriers are installed and operating properly. In addition, AHTD Implementation Team members presented 10 machine guarding training seminars to OSHA staff nationwide. The seminars provided technical information about the use of machine guarding devices and robotics in the workplace.

The renewal signed in November 2008 allows OSHA and AHTD to continue sharing expertise and information with AHTD members, industrial workers and supervisors, and others on the proper selection, use, maintenance and installation of machine guarding equipment and the use of lockout/tagout procedures.

"The Alliance has produced many resources to expand employers' and employees' knowledge about potential injuries caused by moving machine parts," said Acting Assistant Secretary of Labor for OSHA Thomas M. Stohler. "We will continue to develop and share best practices to protect the safety and health of employees who operate and handle machinery. Cooperative programs are an essential part of OSHA's balanced approach to improve workplace safety and health."

George Otte, ATHD president said, "The AHTD is pleased to renew our Alliance with OSHA. Our members along with OSHA personnel are working together to produce programs and materials to educate industrial employees and to make the workplace safer and more productive."

AHTD comprises 132 automation solution provider companies from the U.S. and Canada and 77 manufacturers from around the world. Formed in 1985, the association represents manufacturers, automation solution providers and high technology industry professionals who develop and provide automation systems for general industry. AHTD's education and training programs provide information on technologies and solutions for machinery operators, supervisors and designers.
