European Commission presses for tighter Basel II banking rules - report

The European Commission is pressing for tighter banking regulations under the so-called Basel II deal to be agreed by April 2009 and is seeking the European Parliament's backing, Handelsblatt reported, citing a proposal by EU commissioners sent to EU finance ministers.

Commissioners Joaquin Almunia and Charlie McCreevy are urging the European Parliament to vote in favour of stricter rules on banks' off-balance-sheet investments, liquidity requirements and large loans before the parliament's current term ends in June 2009.
