Global Regulator's Proposals Aim to Fortify Banks

A prominent panel of experts that helps set regulations for the global banking system proposed new measures to help make banks more resilient to shocks, such as the credit crunch currently roiling markets.

The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision said the measures would push banks to introduce stronger risk-management protocols and improve procedures for valuing and disclosing assets. They would also require lenders to keep more liquidity and capital to cushion against off-balance-sheet losses and overhaul current Basel II regulations to include complex credit products.
