FDA Assigns Fast Track Status To Pharmion's Oral Azacitidine For Treating Myelodysplastic Syndromes

www.rttnews.com

Pharmion Corp. (PHRM) announced that its oral investigational drug Azacitidine for the treatment of Myelodysplastic Syndromes has been granted Fast Track designation.

The myelodysplastic syndromes or MDS are a group of diseases in which the production of blood cells by the bone marrow is disrupted. In contrast to leukemia, in which the white cell is produced in excessively large numbers, the production of any, and sometimes of all, types of blood cells is affected in MDS. There are three types of blood cells namely red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.

Fast Track status is assigned for products that are intended to treat a serious or life-threatening condition and demonstrate the potential to address unmet medical needs for that condition. The fast track status is meant to bring valuable treatments with a great need to market more quickly to save more lives.
