Faith group asks Hill to let FDA regulate tobacco

www.indystar.com

A coalition of Hoosier faith groups is pressuring an Indiana congressman from one of the nation's biggest tobacco producing regions to support new regulation of tobacco products.

The Hoosier Faith and Health Coalition, which includes more than 600 congregations around the state, wants Rep. Baron Hill to support House Resolution 1108, which would grant the Food and Drug Administration authority to regulate tobacco production and marketing.
Hill, D-Seymour, has not taken a position on the bill, which will eventually come before the Energy and Commerce committee to which he belongs. But the issue puts the congressman, who was returned to office in a bitter election fight in 2006, squarely between competing interests.
While tobacco is a key cash crop in Hill's district, it is also a prime target of the United Methodist Church, a linchpin of the coalition and a vehement supporter of increased federal regulation. Hill is a member of First United Methodist Church of Seymour.
