America’s obsession with healthy eating continues to escalate. The 2007 International Food Information Council’s Food & Health Survey revealed that 75 percent of Americans polled were concerned with their weight, as opposed to 66 percent in 2006. And 70 percent of those surveyed felt that dietary changes can help significantly with losing extra pounds.

In addition, 72 percent wanted to know the amount and type of fats they ate, and 70 percent were concerned with how much sugar they consumed. Eighty percent said they agreed that certain foods and beverages could improve “heart health,” and 76 percent maintained that what one consumes can contribute to overall health and wellness. All of these figures jumped at least seven percent since last year.*

As such, food manufacturers clamor even more for the FDA’s various Nutrient Content Claims – such as low fat, low sodium and low cholesterol. While labs or third-party analysts are most manufacturers’ routes for creating FDA-compliant nutrition panels, it seems in this age of Web 2.0, there should be a more interactive, easier and quicker option available.
