FDA Cannot Guarantee Drug Safety

technews.iit.edu

Dr. Andrew Von Eschenbach, the current Food and Drug Administration Commissioner could not deny at a Congressional hearing on November 1st that there are serious deficiencies in ensuring safe manufacturing practices by foreign manufacturing plants (Wall Street Journal, November 2, 2007). Although, Dr. Eschenbach often claims that our drug supply is the safest in the world.

Currently, over 80 percent of all chemicals ingredients used by the U.S. drug manufacturers are supplied by foreign drug makers. While the FDA is supposed to inspect domestic drug manufacturers every two years, there are no such requirements for foreign manufacturers. Based on recently published reports on questionable quality of China’s manufacturing process, quality control in other countries is a huge concern.
