FDA extends sunscreen rule comment period

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration extended the comment period on its proposed sunscreen regulations to Dec. 26.

The initial comment period was to have expired at midnight Monday.

The revised sunscreen rule, when finalized, will affect over-the-counter sunscreen products that protect against ultraviolet B and A rays. The proposal incorporates new testing and labeling requirements.

The FDA said the comment extension would allow time to complete laboratory testing and consumer studies on the proposed labeling system. FDA officials said the extension also balanced industry concerns and the interests of public health to ensure sunscreen products properly inform consumers of the level of protection they provide.
