Fast Track cures nothing at FDA, but what lovely side effects for industry

www.cleveland.com

The Fast Track doesn't have much of a track record when it comes to getting new and ostensibly promising pharmaceutical products with exciting potential to market. In most cases, the drugs that get in what's ostensibly the express lane to market don't really get there much faster than the ones given the normal treatment. And once there, most have proven to be less than revolutionary.

The one thing related to Fast Track treatment that is noticeably and consistently fast is the increase in stock prices of drug manufacturers when the Food and Drug Administration announces that a product under development has been given the Fast Track label. And that has meant many a quick trip to the bank for investors - and even for pharmaceutical company executives - who play the stock market to their advantage when prices spike for a day or two. Presumably, they use the drive-up window when they make their deposits.
