FDA launches crackdown on custom-made hormones

www.kgan.com

The government is cracking down on Internet sales of custom-made hormones for menopausal women.
The market for the hormones sprouted after doctors judged prescription estrogen therapy can be too risky for many. The FDA is sending out warning letters to companies charging that the online pharmacies are violating federal law by making false and misleading claims about their hormone therapy drugs. The mixtures are not reviewed by the FDA. Women turned to the products after a 2002 study that found replacement hormones made by drug companies raised the risk of heart attacks, breast cancer and strokes.
