A small Malvern maker of a competitor drug to Botox said it was cooperating with a federal review of possible health risks from its treatment. The drug, Myobloc, is made by Solstice Neurosciences Inc. The Food and Drug Administration said Friday that it was reviewing the safety of Myobloc as well as of Botox. Both are botulinum toxins and have been linked to dangerous botulism symptoms in some users.

Solstice, privately owned by five investor groups, employs about 150 people, and has manufacturing operations in south San Francisco. U.S. sales of Myobloc in 2007 were $20 million.

Myobloc and Botox - which is made by Allergan Inc., of Irvine, Calif. - work by blocking nerve impulses, causing muscles to relax. Botox had worldwide sales last year of $1.2 billion for both cosmetic and therapeutic uses.
