FDA approves GlaxoSmithKline drug

www.bizjournals.com

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday night approved the GlaxoSmithKline drug Entereg, designed to help patients regain gastrointestinal function earlier after bowel surgery.

The condition the drug was developed to treat, known as postoperative ileus, affects almost all patients undergoing such surgery and can cause significant discomfort and prolonged hospital stays for patients.

Adolor developed the drug in a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK), the London-based pharmaceutical giant that has a U.S. headquarters in Research Triangle Park and a manufacturing facility in Zebulon. It is the first product approval for Adolor.
