Breathing device given FDA approval

www.chron.com

The Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday approved a medical device that last year allowed a young Pearland woman paralyzed in a swing-set accident to breathe without a ventilator for the first time in 15 years.
The implantable device, known as a diaphragm pacing system, electrically stimulates breathing in patients with spinal cord injuries. Its battery-powered jolts to muscle and nerves in the diaphragm cause contractions that allow air to fill the upper and lower parts of the lung.
