FDA Melamine Guidelines “Seriously Flawed,” Consumer Group Reports

A recent report of a consumer group cited the FDA’s allowance of melamine contaminated baby formula products being sold to consumers as a risk to their children’s health. As reported by the Associated Press (AP), the nonprofit Consumers Union released a report on Friday stating the FDA’s determination of trace amounts of melamine in infant formula as safe was a risk medically because infants might consume more than one product. Many parents choose to combine infant formulas for digestion, nutritional, and other purposes.The consumer group is quoted as stating in a letter written to Andrew C. von Eschenbach, an FDA commissioner, and Tom Daschle of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, that the “FDA should regulate infant formula based on an assumption that infants may be exposed to melamine and cyanuric acid in combination.”
