Fred Thompson's Record: Cybersecurity Good, Free Culture Bad

Kevin Mitnick, the most famous fugitive hacker ever to thumb his nose at law-enforcement authorities, laughs when he recalls being asked to testify about cybersecurity in front of then-Sen. Fred Thompson.

"The hearing aired on C-SPAN, and after I testified, people started contacting me to speak on security issues," Mitnick, a self-described Democrat, recalls. "I really have Fred Thompson to thank for my public-speaking career."

Thompson, who was chairman of the Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs, had invited Mitnick to Capitol Hill shortly after the hacker was released from prison in January 2000. The future Law & Order star wanted to hear from the ex-hacker about the need to improve federal agencies' computer-security practices.
