Hospital wants to be hip to HIPAA

www.bigbeargrizzly.net

The right to privacy might be a point of contention for constitutional scholars, but when it comes to the laws governing how hospitals operate, things are pretty clear—patients are entitled to privacy per federal mandate.

That mandate is the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. HIPAA requires that patient information be kept secure and private. Meeting these standards is a real concern for Bear Valley Community Hospital administrators, and hospital Chief Executive Officer Vi Colunga is concerned.

Patient receiving in the main lobby and emergency room offers little privacy for patients, Colunga said. She is also concerned about the lab’s lack of a waiting area.
