Doctor ordered to hand over health records

A local gynecologist must turn over copies of medical records on Laura Smith, 22, of Sandwich, who died Sept. 13 of unknown reasons during an abortion the doctor performed, according to a court order issued Monday.

Rapin Osathanondh, a state-licensed physician with offices at 68 Camp St. in Hyannis and in Brookline, had allowed Smith's mother, Eileen, of Orlando, Fla., to review but not copy some of the records during a meeting in a Boston hotel about 10 days after the death, according to Eileen Smith.

Smith filed a civil complaint in Barnstable Superior Court on Oct. 4, seeking copies of her daughter's medical records, autopsy reports and a completed death certificate. Named in the complaint are Osathanondh, Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, the state Medical Examiner's Office, and Cape & Island Center for Women's Health of Hyannis.
