Borgess contractor error may have violated HIPAA

Some 150 Premier Radiology patients received medical bills for procedures they never had, and those bills provided confidential information on the patients who actually were treated.

From Sept. 9 through Sept. 25, a computer error at Premier Radiology's Kalamazoo office incorrectly matched patients who had procedures done in the past with patients who recently received radiological procedures at Borgess Medical Center.

The bills included the names of the person who received the procedure, the doctors who performed them and a description of the treatments.

The error has been fixed and Premier is sending letters to those who mistakenly received the bills, as well as those whose names and medical information is on the bills, said John Brack, practice manager for the company.
