Hot Technologies for 2003

The post-Y2K era in health care IT started with a keen eye on regulatory requirements, but has since broadened to take in a wider view of strategies that deliver maximum value from new or existing IT resources. With that backdrop in place, ADVANCE approached a half dozen current or former CIOs and asked them to single out technologies with the potential to make a significant impact on health care organizations (clinically, financially, or both) during the coming year. Their responses appear in the following sections.

Uncovering opportunity
Ward Keever, ADVANCE Editorial Advisory Board member, executive for health care strategies with SeeBeyond Technologies, and former CIO at the University of Pennsylvania Health System, shared his view on promising technologies: "The IT executive's job is to support and, in some cases, enable the organization's strategic plan. The best way to do that is to find and implement the 'electronic glue' that will help improve the quality of care, eliminate unnecessary costs and enhance customer service. We also face the challenge and responsibility of finding the best 'glue' for the best value. There are a lot of expensive choices out there and each has its merits. But with a limited amount of capital resources, we need to select those that will maximize the impact on corporate strategies."
