HIPAA at 5: Privacy act reaches beyond hospitals

Strangers and those close to Siran Stacy clinched tightly to news of his medical condition after an automobile accident that killed five of his family members.

Outside of his room at Flowers Hospital was a sign that asked for peace but left space for people to sign and leave condolences.

People who never made it to the hospital to visit were able to stay informed of the former University of Alabama football player’s condition through the news media because the family signed a waiver allowing the media to simply call and ask for Stacy’s general condition.

The same document at a Birmingham hospital restricted the release of the condition of one of Stacy’s daughters, whom the family requested the media not be informed about.
