Five HIPAA firings

How could close to two dozen nurses be fired from South Jersey Healthcare without the union being made aware of the firings? It can't, according to SJH spokesman Greg Potter. "In 2008, five people were terminated at SJH for Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act violations. None was a nurse," Potter said Tuesday.

The rumor of nurses being fired for violating privacy laws took off after a training session Monday for SJH's new computer system, when it was announced that 20 nurses with SJH were fired this year for violating HIPAA, with two facing criminal charges, according to Michelle Silvio, president of the nurses' union at SJH.

The announcement was a warning for nurses to be "very cognitive of who knows your password" in regard to accessing the new computer system, Silvio said.
