AMA Editorial Calls for Federal Bills To Address Health IT Barriers

www.ihealthbeat.org

The American Medical Association is calling for federal health IT legislation to address common barriers to physicians' health IT adoption, including technical standards, privacy and financing, according to an American Medical News editorial.

The editorial notes that the physician community recognizes the "positive intention" of health IT and "the potential for problems from poor implementation."

AMA is urging lawmakers to address technical standards in health IT legislation. According to the editorial, "A lack of standards means that often a physician's health IT system might not be able to access or connect to another doctor's system, or a hospital's system."
