Employers must pay for most required protective gear, OSHA rules

Employers must pay for almost all personal protective equipment required for employees on the job, according to a new rule clarification from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The “final rule” notes that employers in the general industry, construction and maritime industries are already required to pay for 95 percent of the personal protective equipment worn by their workers.

Worker advocates such as the AFL-CIO applauded the rule clarification — nine years after it first was proposed. Unions had pursued legal action, and Congress had intervened to push the Department of Labor to act.

“Workers should no longer be required to dip into their own pocket to keep themselves safe from harm at work,” said Joseph Hansen, president of United Food and Commercial Workers International.
