NM contractors fined by OSHA

Two Albuquerque construction companies have been cited by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for 17 asbestos-related safety violations.

The agency announced that Maloy Construction Inc., a general contractor, and Deerfield Corp., a plumbing and construction company, had 17 violations of asbestos exposure at a Mescalero, N.M., hospital construction site.

OSHA's El Paso, Texas, district office began an inspection of the site on June 9 after receiving a complaint alleging that employees were removing asbestos-laden materials without proper protective gear.

"The OSHA inspection revealed that the two companies failed to take appropriate action to protect their employees," said Rich Tapio, OSHA's area director in Lubbock, Texas. "Employers must remain committed to keeping the workplace safe and healthful at all times."
