NAA, Newspapers Prepare for More OSHA Scrutiny
www.naa.org The association is developing safety programs to help newspapers prepare for the possibility of an inspection from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
"The bottom line isn't if OSHA is going to inspect you, but when," says Kevin George, director of engineering and maintenance at The Columbus (Ohio) Dispatch, and chair of NAA's Environmental, Health and Safety Committee. "As a good safety manager, you should be looking at your machine guards and looking at what replacements are necessary. Determine what adjustments, repairs or modifications are necessary to ensure your employees are properly protected from the equipment's potential ‘caught-in' hazard."
The heightened concern stems from OSHA updating its National Emphasis Program on Amputations last October and identifying printing presses as a type of equipment its inspectors might consider checking ("New OSHA Program May Include Newspaper Presses," May, p. 63). Although commercial printing and lithography are the industries actually identified in the update, NAA is predicting that OSHA will likely increase newspaper press plant inspections because of hazards associated with printing facilities in general.
