OSHA's tests for school bus toxins inconclusive

www.statesmanjournal.com

Tests for toxins on several fire-damaged Salem-Keizer School District buses showed nothing at a level that would pose a health risk, district spokesman Jay Remy said Tuesday.Drivers have complained for a year that 15 buses damaged in a fire cause nausea, headaches, burning noses and throats, a cough and troubled breathing.

In response to complaints, the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division investigated last spring but found nothing to explain the symptoms. In November, as driver complaints continued, OSHA agreed to perform further tests. Beginning Dec. 12, six buses were tested for particulates, ozone and volatile organic compounds.

OSHA officials gave the district an oral report about the results Tuesday morning.
