Ask OSHA about chemical exposure

www.fayobserver.com

OSHA has a number of rules for employers regarding this colorless gas, which is used in a number of ways, including sterilization of surgical equipment in hospitals.

People who are exposed to the gas can suffer health problems ranging from eye pain and a sore throat to cancer and nerve damage.

The gas is used in the production of solvents, antifreeze, textiles, detergents, adhesives, polyurethane foam and pharmaceuticals. Smaller amounts of ethylene oxide are also present in fumigants and sterilants for spices and cosmetics, according to OSHA.

If employees are exposed to unsafe levels of the gas, the employer is supposed to retain records of that event and the employee’s medical records for 30 years.
