Federal inspectors will soon begin targeted checks of hundreds of companies in which combustible dust is a workplace hazard, the head of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Monday.

OSHA Administrator Ed Foulke Jr. made the announcement during a visit to the site of a Feb. 7 sugar refinery explosion in Port Wentworth, Ga., where 12 workers were killed and dozens more injured.

Also Monday, Rep. John Barrow of Savannah and House Education and Labor Committee Chairman George Miller said they will introduce a bill forcing OSHA to issue new regulations governing industrial dust. Miller scheduled a congressional hearing on the issue for March 12.
