Critics say OSHA paints too rosy a picture of statistics

www.news-journalonline.co

When federal safety inspectors arrived at S&B Metal Products of East Florida Inc. in Daytona Beach in July, they found metal working machines covered with blood.

Employees were busy working, using drills and saws without blade guards. Finally, a manager cleaned off the blood. He hadn't been offered a Hepatitis-B vaccine and didn't follow procedures for cleaning up blood and other potentially infectious materials.

The company was one of 36 in Volusia and Flagler counties cited and fined by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration in 2007 and the first part of 2008. The Daytona Beach News-Journal obtained copies of the citations through a Freedom of Information Act request.
