Environmental firm fined by OSHA

True Blue Environmental Services has been hit with $95,750 in fines for alleged workplace hazards, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration announced Thursday.The company, on Northfield Road, intends to contest the citations.

The Springfield, Mass., OSHA office issued the citations Feb. 21 after conducting a two-month investigation, which began in October. Nine of the citations stem from a job site in Northampton, Mass.; a site in Danbury also was cited.True Blue was contracted to work at a former manufactured-gas plant in Northampton to remove coal tar from the soil.

OSHA alleged that True Blue employees were overexposed to toxic benzene and that the company had not taken adequate steps to reduce exposure.
