The agency investigating a trench collapse that killed two men Monday said such tragedies have grown rare over the past decade.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration began its investigation Tuesday into the collapse that killed Walter Eickelman, 48, of Benton, and Ronny Yankey, 38, of Ellis Grove, who were working on a project to expand Millstadt's wastewater treatment plant.

In the six-state OSHA region that covers Illinois, only one death had been reported since 2005.
