Crane disaster probers focus on recently-fined New Jersey contractor

The Manhattan Distric attorney's office and the city Department of Investigation have opened inquiries into the the East Side crane disaster.Probers are focusing on a New Jersey contractor that was recently fined for job safety violations, the Daily News has learned.

Joy Contractors Inc. of Elizabeth, N.J., was hired to operate the giant crane on E. 51st St. Last fall, JCI agreed to pay fines after federal regulators discovered dangerous work conditions at a Westchester County job site.It's still unclear exactly what caused the top section of the giant crane to topple while it was being "jumped" into position.
