How to check reports on workplace safety

www.charlotte.com

This is Sunshine Week, when newspapers and other organizations emphasize public access to government documents, records and meetings. The week ends today. The Observer focused on helping readers learn how to access and use public records. Reporters interviewed more than 200 poultry workers in the Southeast, along with regulators, workplace safety experts, lawyers and company officials. They also reviewed thousands of pages of Occupational Safety and Health Administration documents.

Federal and state OSHA agencies inspect workplaces to investigate complaints and look for hazards that could kill or injure workers. The Observer filed Freedom of Information Act requests to obtain copies of inspection reports for poultry plants across the Southeast.

From those reports, the Observer learned details of several deadly accidents, including a chlorine leak that killed a man in 2003.You can see which companies OSHA has inspected -- and whether the companies were cited and fined -- by visiting www.osha.gov and clicking on "Inspection Data" on the lower right-hand corner of the page.
