11 Galleria contractors fined by OSHA over fall hazards

Eleven contractors, mostly from Western and Central New York, are facing combined penalties of $135,700 after the Occupational Safety and Health Administration alleged they failed to protect employees against fall hazards during construction at the Walden Galleria. The agency said it investigated following a complaint alleging fall hazards at the Cheektowaga mall job site. The violations stemmed from visits by OSHA to the site last October and November.

Arthur Dube, OSHA’s area director in Buffalo, said the hazards observed by the agency encompassed a wide variety of construction trades. “Fall hazards are the No. 1 killer on construction sites,” he said. OSHA proposed the largest fine, $78,500, against Utica-based GVH Development, the mall project’s general contractor. The agency accused GVH of “willful, repeat and serious violations of fall and other safety standards.”
