OSHA accuses Briarcliff library contractors of safety violations

lohud.com

Four contractors who have been working on Briarcliff Manor's new library are facing $130,600 in potential fines for alleged safety violations, according to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The contractors were cited after an OSHA inspector driving by the construction site spotted workers in an apparently unprotected excavation area, according to an OSHA news release yesterday. The library is in the midst of a $4 million renovation and expansion of the building.

"While no cave-in occurred, the potential for death or disabling injury was real and present, since an unguarded excavation can collapse in seconds, crushing and burying employees before they can react or escape," Diana Cortez, OSHA's area director in Tarrytown, said in the news release.
