New rule puts safety on company tab

Yes, "providing" safety equipment to your employees means you have to pay for it, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration has told companies in a new rule to take effect May 15.

OSHA has required employers to provide protective equipment for years, but the new rule clarifies who pays for it. Employers must pay for their employees' safety equipment, such as hard hats and goggles. "OSHA has always had the standards, but questions have arisen about who pays for the personal protective equipment," said George Chartier, an OSHA spokeman in Washington, D.C.

The rule change may not have much of a practical effect. Many employers in Volusia and Flagler counties already pay for their employees' equipment."We've always paid for it, even the gear that is optional," said Rod Stone, general manager of Pharmex, a division of TimeMed Labeling Systems, in Port Orange.
