Shipyard honored by OSHA

Thanks to a "supportive culture" between labor and management, the yard for the third time has been named a "star" site in the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection program. The VPP promotes workplace safety and health, through a collaboration of employers and employees at all levels. Al Morrissey, OSHA assistant regional administrator, said in order to receive star status, the shipyard was subjected to a thorough investigation by a team of OSHA and industry officials.

Morrissey said there was a time at the shipyard when management and labor did not work well together, but the two Base Realignment and Closure Commission investigations changed that. "The change in that relationship has been enormous," he said. "They work well together. The culture is so different."
