Federal safety officials have recommended fines and cited two Toledo-area firms for serious safety violations found during inspections in February.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration has proposed a fine of $13,500 for Johnson Controls Inc. for five violations involving the use of safety equipment at its facility at 10300 Industrial Rd., Holland. Inspectors cited the firm for not ensuring that employees wore protective items and flame-retardant clothing while working on high-voltage electrical equipment.

The agency also recommended a fine of $10,675 for Balfour Beatty Construction Inc., of 901 Front St., for four serious violations and one lesser violation while the company was working on repairs to the Martin Luther King Bridge in Toledo.
