OSHA must step up to protect construction workers

www.nydailynews.com

Congress will hold hearings on construction safety. Among the witnesses will be acting Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri, who will likely describe the city's many efforts to deal with the epidemic of building work site fatalities, including the successful campaign to safeguard workers on scaffolds. He may go on to detail laws and regulations the mayor has proposed and speak of the 56 new inspectors hired to enforce the city's building code.

LiMandri should conclude his testimony with an emphatic demand: that the Bush administration and its Occupational Safety and Health Administration finally do what's necessary to protect workers' safety and health.

For all the talk about how the city has failed to keep construction sites safe, it's this federal agency, not the city, that has jurisdiction over worker safety.
