Nevada OSHA responds to criticism that it missed Saturday’s safety workshop

www.lasvegassun.com

Nevada's Occupational Safety and Health Administration was a no-show to Saturday's meeting at County chambers to discuss construction safety on Strip projects.

That the agency responsible for overseeing workplace safety skipped a meeting to discuss workplace safety disturbed many of the lawmakers, union leaders, and others that attended the meeting.

Nevada OSHA responded. Elisabeth Shurtleff, spokeswoman for the Department of Business and Industry that oversees OSHA, now sends us the following statement:

"Nevada OSHA was invited to attend County Commissioner Chris Giunchigliani’s meeting at Clark County Government Center on Saturday. Nevada OSHA declined but offered to meet one-on-one with the Commissioner to discuss safety issues. Because Nevada OSHA is charged to enforce workplace safety statutes and regulations within their specific jurisdiction, a public forum such as the one on Saturday would not allow them to comment on or discuss many of the issues that would likely arise."
