Elevators safer today, OSHA says

For more than 20 years, grain elevator inspector Deborah Peterson wielded a red tag that gave her authority to close – on the spot – any operation she thought was headed for a dust explosion. She never tagged any of the Minnesota elevators she checked, but she came close. “I said, ‘Here’s the deal, I either need to have you shut down voluntarily, or we have something called an OSHA red tag,’ ” Peterson recalled telling one elevator manager.
