Two weeks ago federal regulators charged a total of 69 accounting firms and individual partners with violating the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the 2002 anti-fraud law, by auditing public companies without registering with the board that supervises the accounting industry.

The Securities and Exchange Commission reported 50 of the firms and partners had already settled with the agency. None of the so-called Big Four accounting firms are said to have been included in this group.
