Call Accounting: Protecting Your Business

While it is part of good labor relations to allow employees the use of company phones for making some personal calls, this privilege can be abused, resulting in excessive phone bills and lost productivity.

For example, FedSmith.com reported that a federal employee, under investigation for using foul and abusive language on the phone, was found to have made more than 650 personal calls in a single month, averaging 13 minutes of every hour.

While this is an extreme case, being able to monitor phone usage and having accurate records of date, time, duration, origin and destination of all calls for a given day, week or month can be invaluable in settling labor disputes or doing employee performance evaluations.

This information can be particularly useful in dealing with labor unions or the court system, where accurate records are of paramount importance. In fact, without a call accounting system it would be difficult to meet the requirements of the Sarbanes Oxley act of 2002, which applies to all publicly held companies.
