Who knew it would grow to such prominence? Time was, internal auditing was relegated to the background of corporate operations, its practitioners' inquisitions as unwelcome as those performed by internal affairs units within police departments.

Today, the importance and benefits of maintaining a strong internal auditing department are growing. Their inclusion in publicly traded corporations was mandated five years ago with the passage of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act; that federal statute requires the companies to perform internal auditing on the firm's processes and operations.
