Cyberattacks have morphed from an individual hacker’s intent to prove their prowess and intelligence at breaking into computers to a more organized effort where the ultimate goal is to commit fraud or steal critical information. And attacks are on the rise. In a recent eWEEK article, Craig Morford, the first Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Ohio, said: “We’re seeing the growth of a large number of criminal entities targeting U.S. organizations for cyber‑crimes.”

Companies trying to defend against these organized efforts find that their employees are not helping matters. In fact, 42 percent of 269 companies surveyed by CIO Insight magazine in 2006 did not have confidence that their users consistently followed their company’s security policies and procedures. Such reckless behavior puts data and systems at greater risk.
