Information security - also known as Information Assurance (IA) is one of the most pressing issues for American defense. Because of the highly networked nature of the current computing environment, the threat to the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the country's information is a matter of national security. Congress passed FISMA (Federal Information Security Management Act) to ensure information security and to provide effective oversight for the protection of all federal operations and assets. The law requires all federal agencies to implement policies and procedures to that end and to report their progress annually to Congress.
