The paper shows that CFOs are seeing good performance management as strategic support for the company, not just a part of the reporting routine. With the advent of the Sarbanes- Oxley Act, the definition of performance management is evolving again. A recent CFO Research Services survey found that 65 percent of large-company CFOs found that SOX, as well as HIPAA and, for some companies, Basel II, are actually a catalyst for positive long-term change. Some have discovered problems they never knew existed, and have become more aware than ever that performance surprises can be as damaging as financial management control failures.
